Thermo Scientific™ Cetrimide Agar (USP, EP) (Dehydrated)
Selectively isolate and differentiate Pseudomonas aeruginosa from a range of samples with this medium while conforming to International Pharmacopoeia.
Brand: Thermo Scientific™ CM0579B
Description
Selectively isolate and differentiate Pseudomonas aeruginosa from a range of samples using Thermo Scientific™ Oxoid™ Cetrimide Agar (USP, EP) (Dehydrated). The medium contains magnesium chloride and potassium sulphate for improved pigment production and recovery of Pseudomonas aeruginosa while strongly suppressing Klebsiella, Proteus and Providencia spp. The medium conforms to European Pharmacopoeia for Microbial Limit Tests1.
Cetrimide Agar (USP, EP) is a modification of the original medium described by Brown and Lowbury2 for the selective isolation and differentiation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa from a range of samples. Cetrimide is a quaternary ammonium compound with bactericidal activity against a broad range of Gram-positive organisms and some Gram-negative organisms.
- Pseudomonas aeruginosa forms fluorescent green colonies while the growth of Klebsiella, Proteus and Providencia is strongly suppressed.
- Enhanced pigment production aids identification
- Conforms to U.S. Pharmacopeia3 and European Pharmacopoeia1 standards for Microbial Limit Tests.
- The formulation is in line with the A.O.A.C. guidelines4 for isolation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa from cosmetics and in A.O.A.C. method5 for testing disinfectants on hard surfaces.
Pseudomonas aeruginosa produces a number of water soluble iron chelators, including the yellow-green or yellow-brown fluorescent pyoverdin. When pyoverdin combines with the blue water-soluble pyocyanin, the bright green colour characteristic of Pseudomonas aeruginosa is created. The addition of magnesium chloride and potassium sulphate enhances the production of these chelators.
